Lake District Music summer festival celebrates Czech music after its 40th year

For four decades, August in the Lake District has come with a soundtrack of chamber music in churches, halls and concert rooms across the county. The Lake District Music summer festival reached a landmark in 2025 and has kept its momentum going since.
The 40th anniversary festival ran from 1 to 10 August 2025, billed as a celebration of 40 exciting years with ten days of music. It opened with the Jess Gillam Ensemble, led by the saxophonist Jess Gillam, a fitting start to such a milestone year.
The 2026 festival, the 41st edition, ran from 31 July to 9 August and built on that anniversary year with a central focus on Czech music. Distinguished Czech artists took part, and the programme also featured the violinist Rachel Podger and an operatic finale of Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.
The Czech theme drew support from the Czech Consulate General in Manchester, which reported that the opening days featured works by Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček and Josef Suk. The Wihan Quartet and Trio Bohémo also ran masterclasses, reflecting the festival's long-standing commitment to nurturing young musicians.
Concerts took place in a range of venues around the Lakes, from parish churches to concert halls. Visit Lake District listed a Czech-themed concert at Ambleside Parish Church on 1 August 2026 featuring the Resol String Quartet, and the 2026 programme also marked the festival's return to Keswick after several years away.
That mix of international performers and intimate local venues is part of the festival's charm. Audiences can hear world-class chamber music in a parish church, then step outside into a summer evening in the fells.
For a region often celebrated for its writers and painters, the festival is a reminder that the Lake District has a rich musical life too, and one that has now been running for more than 40 years.
Details of future festivals, concert venues and tickets are published on the Lake District Music website, where the programme is usually announced in the spring.
