Brimstone Spa on the Langdale Estate offers a mountain hideaway

The Langdale valley is famous for its dramatic fells, and it is a fitting place for a spa designed around rest and recovery. Brimstone, on the Langdale Estate near Ambleside, has become one of the Lake District's most talked-about wellness retreats.
The spa opened around 2016, a significant investment by the Langdale Estate. Trade publications Spa Business and Health Club Management reported on its arrival, describing a facility of roughly 900 square metres.
Inside, the scale is generous. The spa has ten treatment rooms, a private spa suite for two, seven thermal experiences and an infinity pool, along with a range of chill-out areas for guests who want to linger between treatments.
The thermal experiences are a key part of the appeal. Moving between heat and cool is a centuries-old approach to relaxation, and it pairs naturally with a day spent walking in the valley outside.
The hotel attached to the spa has also earned recognition. In 2025 Brimstone was included in the Michelin Selected Hotels list, placing it among the British places to stay that the Michelin Guide highlights for their quality and character.
It has a design pedigree too. Brimstone was a top prize winner at the Northern Design Awards in 2013, reflecting the careful thought that went into its architecture and interiors.
Travel writers have taken notice. The Arbuturian has featured Brimstone as its Spa of the Month, and it regularly appears in round-ups of the best spa hotels in the Lake District, often singled out for its setting among woodland and fells. That kind of independent praise matters for a spa that sits some way from the busier lakeside towns.
For walkers, it is an especially appealing combination: a day on the Langdale Pikes followed by an evening in warm water. For others, it is simply a place to switch off in one of the most peaceful valleys in the national park.
Details of spa access, treatments and stays are available on the Langdale Estate's Brimstone website, where bookings can be made directly.
